Before you decide to start a home inspection business, there are a
few important things you should know about the Home Inspection industry
in Georgia.
First, it is entirely self-regulated. There is no "home
inspector" license required for an individual to set up an inspection
business. As a result, it is often very difficult for home buyers to
find and recognize a qualified inspector.
Second, getting into the
home inspection business can be confusing. There are an increasing
number of training businesses offering a variety of educational programs.
Some schools may offer to help their graduates build a business by sending
them referrals for a percentage of the inspection free. Unfortunately
not all schools will provide you with the skills necessary to protect
homebuyers from poor purchase decisions.
Third, the Georgia Association of Home
Inspectors (GAHI) is here to help. GAHI was created in 1989
to help homebuyers make informed purchase decisions by improving the
service and reputation of the overall home inspection industry.
All GAHI members are held accountable to a high Standard of Operating
Practices (SOP) for inspections that exceeds standards required by other
states' licensing boards and every other home inspection organization
in the country.
In order to help new business owners prepare to start their own business
and ensure that our members are able to maintain their credentials,
GAHI formed the Tim Birch Technical
Academy in 2004. The Academy offers a foundation "Home
Inspection Methods" class recommended for all new home inspectors
as well as residential building code certification classes for home
inspectors, builders and municipals inspectors.
